Protein Characterization Career Opportunities at The Dow Chemical Company
The Dow Chemical Company is making a strategic investment to significantly ramp up product development activities in the BioSciences markets. This emerging industry is stimulating a large effort in the R&D of new biotechnology derived products ranging from agricultural commodities, to biomaterials, biomemetics, and biofuels. Areas of Technical Expertise:
•Isolation of target proteins and protein isoforms from complex biological matrices
•Development and implementation of strategies for characterizing protein structure including tertiary structure and post translational modifications
•Correlation of protein structure/function relationships
•Developing quantification methods in complex biological matrices
•Generation of regulatory reports supporting product registration

Candidate Attributes: •Ph.D. in Analytical/Protein Biochemistry Chemistry is required.
Post-doctoral and/or 5 years of industrial experience are preferred.
•A track record of technical publications, highly effective communication (written & verbal), interpersonal skills, teamwork, and demonstrated leadership is essential.
•Transferable skills and flexible technical interests aligned with Dow competencies and product platforms.

Associate Research Scientist, Bristol-Myers Squibb
Express recombinant proteins in E. coli or yeast. Purify recombinant proteins from E. coli, baculovirus infected insect cells, and other sources. Ability to work independently and develop multi step chromatography protein purification protocols from experience or from researching the existing scientific literature. Biophysical characterization of protein protein interactions using kinetic or equilibrium methods. Characterize the protein structure, stability and aggregation state of protein therapeutic agents and protein targets. Closely collaborate with scientists within own department and with external customers.

Position Requirements:
B.S. or M.S. in Biochemistry or related field. Two or more years of post degree experience would be preferred. Experience with recombinant DNA vectors and optimizing culture conditions to express milligram to gram quantities of proteins in E. coli or yeast. Experience using multi- step chromatography methods. Experience with analytical ultracentrifugation, surface plasmon resonance, microcalorimetry, or light scattering would be an advantage.

Protein Crystallographer is sought to expand structure-based drug discovery capacity and capability at Bristol-Myers Squibb in Princeton, NJ.

Assistant Professor, University of Wisconsin-Stout
The Biology Department at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, a Malcolm-Baldridge Award-winning institution, is seeking highly qualified applicants for two (2) full-time entry-level tenure track teaching positions at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 2007. The successful candidates will focus their energies on the biology of organisms and complement working groups in human biology, biotechnology, or environmental studies. The department is specifically looking for candidates that apply the tools of Genomics, Proteomics, Bioinformatics or Nanobiotechnology to their work. As a school whose mission is to meet societal need (http://www.uwstout.edu/geninfo/mission.shtml), we perceive growth in human biology and human health, but seek excellent applicants from other areas of specialization as well. Biology Department faculty are expected to include undergraduates in all aspects of their academic responsibilities. Selected candidates will integrate research and service activities into the classroom to enrich the student experience for majors and non-majors.

The science faculty at UW-Stout (http://www.uwstout.edu/cas/biology/) are members of an intellectually vibrant learning community that includes students, instructors, and support staff. Faculty members are dedicated to teaching excellence and the application of best practices in the classroom. Scholarly and service activities are well-supported by internal and external grants, and professional development and student travel funds are available. The science faculty have ready access to molecular biology, environmental sampling, neurobiology, and analytical chemistry equipment, both in-house and through consortial agreements with nearby UW system schools. A $36M science building is being built at UW-Stout and new science and engineering initiatives are planned. The Biology Department plays a crucial role in cross-disciplinary biotechnology, nanotechnology, science education, and bioinformatics programs, supports cognitive neuroscience, dietetics, and vocational rehabilitation programs, and provides non-majors science instruction.

Successful applicants will play a role in curriculum development to meet burgeoning need in the Applied Science program, including courses in cell and molecular biology, genetics, proteomics, and genomics. Creativity in developing new courses is encouraged, including offerings that share technological advances and societal responsibilities with non-majors.

Qualifications for these positions include a Ph.D. in biological sciences earned by August 2007, the ability to become an outstanding educator considered a necessity and post-doctoral experience considered an asset. Successful applicants will be expected to teach majors and non-majors courses utilizing laptops in the classroom and web-based technology, develop and maintain an active research program that includes undergraduates, and participate in community service and undergraduate advising.

Sr. Scientist II – Crystallographer, E2700-1531
The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), located in beautiful Golden, Colorado, is a leader in the U.S. Department of Energy’s effort to secure an energy future for the nation that is environmentally and economically sustainable. Our mission is to develop renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies and practices, advance related science and engineering and transfer knowledge and innovations to address the nation’s energy and environmental goals.

We seek a structural biologist to perform creative research in a multidisciplinary environment on the structure, dynamics and function of biological and biomimetic systems related to renewable energy. This individual will plan and perform basic and applied research focused on understanding the mechanisms of biomass biosynthesis, deconstruction, and conversion to renewable fuels. Will have primary responsibility for applying a new Bruker AXS X8 Proteum X-ray Diffraction System to understand protein function and protein-carbohydrate interactions. The Scientist will work as part of a team to integrate crystallographic methods for structure determination with systems biology, chemistry, nanoscience and computational research tools, including the imaging capabilities at NREL’s Biomass Surface Characterization Laboratory while working safely and in compliance with NREL and DOE safety, environment, health, human resource and quality policies. Will publish in peer reviewed scientific journals, participate in conferences and workshops and contribute to program development in the areas of structural, computational and systems biology.

Qualifications include:

• PhD in biology, biochemistry, chemistry, or computational biology with specific training in protein crystallography or equivalent related experience
• Twelve years relevant experience
• Demonstrated experience with experimental and computational methods in protein crystallography as demonstrated, in part, by published structures and peer-reviewed manuscripts
• Excellent interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively in a collaborative team environment
• Demonstrated ability to obtain sponsor funding and maintain sponsor relationships
• Excellent peer-reviewed publication record
• Effective written and oral communication skills
• Willingness to travel to synchrotron radiation facilities for some data collection
• Demonstrated experience with general biochemical topics, such as multicomponent enzyme systems, enzyme mechanisms and kinetics, and protein expression and purification preferred
• Working knowledge of molecular biology techniques for protein evolution, mutation and characterization a plus
• Experience with glycosyl hydrolase or related enzyme systems desired
• Strong potential to contribute to and lead scientific programs related to NREL’s missions, and to mentor scientific staff a plus
