When we have two or more analogous peptides, we can sub-localize the
deuteriums by subtraction. For example, if you know the deuterium
incorporation in segment 1-7 and 1-9 at a given time point, the subtraction
of the two can give the deuterium incorporation in the segment 8-9.
In the following figures, the left side is the raw data (deuterium buildup curves measured in peptides) and the right side is the sub-localized results (some are the same as the left side and the others are by subtraction). The arrows indicate which raw data were used to calculate which sub-localized results.
